About Kindergarten

Welcome to the 2017 - 2018 school year.  We are looking forward to working with you, helping your child grow and develop in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. Our goal is to provide quality instruction with standards, realistic expectations, and developmentally appropriate activities to prepare your child for first grade. To ensure that the school year will be a successful one, please note the following information.
Emergency Information/Picking Up Children
In accordance with state law we must have on file the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of the individuals permitted to drop off and pick up your child from school. If someone arrives to pick up your child and we have not been introduced, given written notification, or telephoned, we cannot allow your child to leave with them for their safety. School ends at 3:25 PM.  You will pick up your students from the Maine Ave. side, outside Ms. Douglas’s classroom door. In the event of bad weather, we will dismiss from her classroom.
Visitation and Concerns
I keep an open door policy in my classroom. Parents and other relatives of students are welcome to come to help or observe anytime. When you come to visit, please sign-in in the office to help us monitor school traffic. You cannot visit the classroom/school building without a white pass. I must urge you to communicate your concerns with me! I am a teacher that manages a large classroom. If children bring issues to your attention, it is very likely that they have not communicated these issues with me. I try to be available before school begins and after school ends until 4PM. I ask that you call the school in advance, send a note with your child, or verbally tell me when you are coming so I can make arrangements to effectively meet with you.
Code of Conduct
We have a school wide behavior code which promotes the 3 R’s (Ready, Responsible, and Respectful).  Students earn Liberty Bucks to be used at the school store or for other school related incentives. Kindergarteners are just beginning to learn about appropriate school behavior. Every evening, I provide a behavior checklist to guide conversations about school behavior at home.
Homework
My students must maintain a homework folder. This folder should be brought every day so that school and classroom communications can go home each night. We are moving to a weekly homework schedule as a kindergarten team. All assignments will be assigned on Tuesday and collected on the following Monday. If the child leaves the homework pack in their folder, we will do our best to give feedback. In addition to paper and pencil assignments, students are required to keep a book log and practice sight words.
Lunch/Snacks
Our lunch is from 10:35 – 11:20. Because of an early lunch, students become hungry in the afternoon. In the past, we have had snacks donated to our grade level. This year we are collecting money to purchase class snacks. Each week we will collect $1 from each student to participate in snack time. This money will be used to purchase class snacks. Students are also welcome to bring in their own snacks each day as well. Please choose healthy snacks. Sugary snacks will be sent home.
Academics
We are required by the school to administer literacy and math assessments to inform the academic progress of the students. Students are required to be reading at a first grade level (guided reading level D) by the end of the school year.
